ECOWAS COURT’S NEW LEADERSHIP WELCOMES NIGERIAN STUDENT LEADERS ON A COURTESY VISIT AS THEY PLEDGE SUPPORT FOR JUSTICE AND HUMAN RIGHTS IN WEST AFRICA

The new leadership of the Community Court of Justice, ECOWAS, Honourable President Ricardo Cláudio Monteiro Gonçalves and Honourable Vice President Sengu Mohamed Koroma, on 8 November 2024, received a delegation from the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) who paid a courtesy visit to the Court.

In his remarks, Honourable President Gonçalves expressed his appreciation for the visit, while also emphasising the significant role of young people in shaping the future. “Young people are the future and the guarantee of this country. We are very pleased to receive you and look forward to your contribution to promoting democracy and human rights in our region,” the president said.

The student delegation led by Comrade Joy Mimidoo Gundu, congratulated the recently elected leadership of the Court and reaffirmed NANS’ longstanding support for the Court’s mandate to uphold justice and human rights within West Africa.

Comrade Gundu, representing NANS President Comrade Lucky Emonefe, commended the new leadership for their commitment to justice and rule of law. She stressed the importance of the ECOWAS Court as custodian of democratic principles and human rights.

On his part, Honourable Vice President Koroma also thanked NANS representatives for the visit. He underscored the importance of youth involvement in achieving ECOWAS objectives.

This meeting sets the tone for partnership between the ECOWAS Court and young advocates to advance justice and human rights in West Africa.
