 ECOWAS COURT PRESIDENT CALLS FOR GLOBAL MOVEMENT TO END STATELESSNESS


The President of the Community Court of Justice, ECOWAS, Honorable Justice Maria Do Ceu Silva Monteiro has advocated a ‘global movement to end the scourge of statelessness,’ in which some 10 million people in the world are not considered to be the citizen of any country and subject to its law.


‘ This is unconscionable and one of the anachronisms of the world as it contributes to the perpetuation of human suffering because without the legal protection offered by citizenship, the victims are exposed to severe hardships,’ she said at a forum organised with the UNHCR on Thursday, 3rd March 2016 in Abuja.

 PRESIDENT OF ECOWAS COURT HONOURS OUTGOING STATUTORY APPOINTEES


The President of the ECOWAS regional court, Honourable Justice Marià Do Céu Silva Monteiro, has called for greater synergy among institutions of the Community because of the crucial responsibility vested in them in the region’s integration project.

The President said at a cocktail hosted by the court for the departing members of the management of the ECOWAS Commission and regional parliament that such synergy was desirable in achieving the cohesion required for discharging their mandate in the realisation of the objectives of the community.

 ECOWAS COURT BEGINS HEARING IN A CASE CHALLENGING THE DEATH ROW PROVISONS IN NIGERIA’S STATUTE BOOKS


The ECOWAS Community Court of Justice on Tuesday, 19th January 2016 adjourned until 17th February 2016 hearing in a case brought by a prisoner on death row challenging the provisions for mandatory death sentence in Nigeria’s statute books.

Hearing in the suit was adjourned following the absence of the defendant, the government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Nnenna Obi is in suit No ECW/CCJ/APP/25/15, contending that the existence of these provisions were in conflict with Nigeria’s  1999 Constitution and its obligations under various international instruments to which it is signatory.

 NIGERIAN GOVERNOR CALLS FOR COMMUNITY LAWS THAT PROMOTE DEVELOPMENT AND INTEGRATION


Governor Rochas Okorocha of Nigeria's Imo State on Monday, 6th July 2015 called for the adoption of regional laws that facilitate the realisation of the objectives of the ECOWAS by contributing to the development and integration of West Africa.

Such laws, the Governor said while opening the 7th Judicial Retreat of the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice in Owerri the state capital, should address the challenges militating against regional integration such as the language barrier which hampers the interaction of community citizens and intra-community trade.
