 ECOWAS COMMUNITY COURT OF JUSTICE GETS NEW PRESIDENT


Judges of the Community Court of Justice, ECOWAS have reconstituted the bureau of the Court with the election of Honorable Justice Jérôme Traoré from Burkina Faso as the new President of the Court, Honorable Justice Micah Wilkins Wright from Liberia as Vice President and Honorable Justice Hamèye Founé Mahalmadane from Mali as the Dean.


Justice Traoré, who becomes the first male President of the 15-year old Court, will serve a two year term with the other members of the bureau.

ECOWAS COURT ORDERS GHANA TO PAY $250,000 AS COMPENSATION OVER DEATH OF NIGERIAN STUDENT


The Community Court of Justice, ECOWAS has ordered the Republic of Ghana to pay $250,000 (Two Hundred and Fifty Thousand Dollars) in compensation to the family of a 15-year old Nigerian Student, Augustine Chukwuebuka Ogukwe, who died in a swimming incident on 15 th October 2013 in the country.


Delivering judgement in a case brought by the father of the deceased, Mr Obioma Ogukwe, the Court said that the compensation is for the failure of the country’s police to carry out a proper investigation into the death of the student thereby failing in its obligation to protect and defend all persons within its territory.

  COURT AWARDS 3.25 MILLION DOLLAR COMPENSATION FOR VICTIMS OF 2014 RAID BY NIGERIAN SECURITY FORCES


The Community Court of Justice, ECOWAS has awarded $200,000 as compensation to each of the families of eight persons who were killed on 20th September 2013 by Nigerian security agents during a raid on an uncompleted building in Abuja in a search for Boko Haram insurgents.


Delivering judgment on Tuesday, 7th June 2016 in a case brought by a Nigerian Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) against the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Nigerian Army and the Department of State Security Services, a three –member panel of Judges of the Court also asked the government to pay another 150,000 dollars each to the 11 persons who sustained injuries during the raid.

 ECOWAS COURT DISMISSES CASES FOR HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATIONS AGAINST MEMBER STATES    


The Community Court of Justice, ECOWAS on Tuesday, 17th May 2016 dismissed three cases brought by Community citizens alleging the violation of their human rights by Member States of the Community.


In one of the cases, Mr Abdoulaye Koba, had sued the Republic of Niger claiming 100 million CFA in damages for the violation of his human rights over the failure of the State-owned Bank for Development to pay him the balance of 14,989,407 million CFA owed him by the now defunct bank.
