  ECOWAS COURT, UNHCR SIGN THREE –YEAR COOPERATION AGREEMENT FOR PROTECTION OF RIGHTS OF REFUGEES

The ECOWAS Community Court on tuesday 16th of June 2015 signed a framework document with the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) for cooperation in improving the protection of the rights of refugees, asylum-seekers, returnees, IDPs, stateless persons and those at risk of statelessness in West Africa.


Activities to be implemented under the Memorandum of Understanding, which was signed by the President of the Court, Honorable Justice Maria de Ceu Silva Monteiro and Madame Angele Dikongue-Atangana, the Special Representative of the UNHCR to Nigeria and ECOWAS are broadly in the areas of training and capacity building for judges and staff of Court and the UNHCR, advice on cases before the Court and issues of mutual interest as well as information sharing.

NEW MANAGEMENT OF THE COURT PROMISES TO GIVE PROMINENCE TO STAFF WELFARE

The management of the Community Court of Justice has pledged a new era when staff welfare will enjoy a “high premium” in order to create an environment conducive to the realisation of the objectives of the regional Court.


“We appreciate the importance of a well-motivated staff and will avoid actions that will cause staff frustration, “the president of the Court, Honourable Justice Maria Do Ceu Silva Monteiro said in remarks at the closing of a two day retreat in Calabar, Cross River State, Nigeria on Saturday, 17th January 2015.


She said the emphasis of the new welfare programme will be mainly on the training and capacity building.

PRESIDENT OF ECOWAS COMMISSION PLEDGES SUPPORT FOR THE COMMUNITY COURT


His Excellency, Kadré Desiré Ouédraogo, President of the ECOWAS Commission has pledged his support for the ECOWAS Court of Justice, to enable it surmount its present challenges. “The aim of my visit is to demonstrate my high regard, esteem and support for the Court,” he stated, during a courtesy visit to the Court on Wednesday, 26 November 2014. 


The President of ECOWAS Commission also congratulated the Court for the credibility it enjoys within the West African sub-region, as well as the international community.
