 COMMUNITY COURT RECORDS SIGNIFICANT INCREASE IN CASES OF HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATION


Fifty-two cases, mostly for human rights violations, were filed with the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice within the last 18 months (January 2014 - June 2015), the Chief Registrar of the Court, Mr Tony Anene-Maidoh said on Thursday, 9th July 2015.


"It is evidence of the burgeoning consciousness and confidence of the citizens of the region in the Court as the last bastion for the defence of their human rights," the chief registrar said in a presentation on the first day of the 8th budget and administrative retreat of the Court in Owerri in Nigeria's Imo State.

 COURT PRESIDENT CONDEMNS PHENOMENON OF STREET CHILDREN IN THE REGION

The President of the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice, Honourable Justice Maria de Ceu Silva Monteiro has condemned the phenomenon of street children in the region as an ‘unequivocal violation of the rights of children’ and attributed its ‘exponential increase’ on the inefficiency of the ‘competent institutions’ charged with addressing the structural causes in order to minimise the suffering of the affected children.


‘I must assert that the ECOWAS Court of Justice which holds the jurisdiction of Human Rights, will not fail to be sensitive to this phenomenon and seeks ways to address this trend in the spirit of Article 27 of the UN Convention on the Right of the Child, ‘the President said at the launching in Dakar on Tuesday, 23rd June 2015 of a regional project towards the elimination of the syndrome in the region.

 COURT TO SUPPORT ECOWAS MEMBER STATES IN FACILITATING THE IMPLEMENTATION OF ITS DECISIONS

The President of the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice, Honourable Justice Maria de Céu Silva Monteiro on Thursday, 18th June 2015 pledged to work with Member States to facilitate the designation of competent authorities in the States for the execution of the decisions of the Court in line with the provisions of the 2005 Supplementary Protocol on the Court.


‘The focal points are an important mechanism for the implementation of the decisions of the Court and would contribute to engendering citizen confidence,’ she said at a symbolic ceremony to mark the first anniversary of the swearing in of the current judges of the Court.
