alt THE PRESIDENT OF THE BAR  ASSOCIATION OF BENIN  FOR A BETTER KNOWLEDGE OF THE PROCEEDINGS BEFORE THE COURT


At the audience he granted to the delegation of the ECOWAS Court of Justice on a sensitization mission to Benin, Mr Yvon DETCHENOU, President of the Bar Association of Benin pleaded with the ECOWAS Court of Justice to set up a platform to allow lawyers and practitioners of community law to sufficiently appropriate themselves with practices and procedures before the Court. The President, who received the delegation of the Court on Wednesday, 22 February 2017 in the presence of Mr Armand SOUNTON, Director for Regional Integration was of the opinion that mastering the procedures by lawyers of the host country will enable them to properly represent their clients.


The President lamented the low visibility of the Court in Benin, which is due to the lack of support and documentation on ECOWAS in general and the Court in particular. These materials, if they were available will enable in enlightening the lawyers on the functioning and practices of the Court. He noted that the Court and the Bar Association would benefit if both parties work together for the good of citizens. He hoped that lawyers of Benin would be trained on the procedures and practices before the court such as the one the Court just organized in Burkina Faso.  He promised  to address a correspondence to the Court as soon as possible, for the Court to come to Benin to train legal practitioners.

Speaking on the relationship that the Court could develop with Member States, Yvon DETCHENOU noted  that the Court would gain much by working with the judicial authorities of Member States as regard preliminary ruling procedure.

Prof. Alioune SALL who led the delegation of  five (5) members of the Court   first expressed the gratitude of the Court to the authorities of Benin  for accepting to host the mission. He thanked the President of the Bar Association, who devoted all his time to welcome the delegation. He then presented the objective of the mission and the different activities to be conducted during the mission. Finally, he emphasised on the need to meet the judicial authorities of the country especially the Minister of Justice, the president of the supreme court  to mention but a few
