Chief Registrar of ECOWAS Court Lauds Law Students’ Engagement at Inaugural Moot Court Competition

The Chief Registrar of the Community Court of Justice, ECOWAS, Dr. Yaouza OURO-SAMA, on June 11, 2025, has commended the enthusiasm and dedication of law students participating in the Court’s first-ever Moot Court Competition, held in Zuma Resorts, Zuba, Niger State in Nigeria.

In his opening remarks, he described the event as a “historic moment” that not only enriches legal education but also promotes youth engagement, regional integration, and the advancement of justice across the ECOWAS region.

Dr. OURO-SAMA welcomed participants and emphasized the significance of the competition as a practical learning platform that reflects real courtroom procedures. “This moot court is more than a competition,” he noted. “It is a vital educational tool that cultivates critical thinking, advocacy, and a deep respect for due process.”

Highlighting the role of the Court in the ECOWAS legal architecture, the Chief Registrar traced its evolution from an inter-state court to a regional human rights court with direct individual access. He underscored the importance of familiarizing future legal professionals with the Court’s jurisdiction and its contribution to regional integration.

Dr. OURO-SAMA expressed hope that the Moot Court will become a recurring initiative to empower and unite legal minds across West Africa. He urged participants to absorb the lessons of the competition and carry forward the values of justice, professionalism, and integrity. “To our participants,” he concluded, “may this experience inspire you, challenge you, and deepen your commitment to justice.”

The Moot Court Competition brings together law students from across the region to simulate proceedings before the ECOWAS Court, offering them firsthand exposure to the workings of an international tribunal and the opportunity to refine their advocacy skills.
